Words have power.
The old adage, "Sticks and
stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me," is
certainly inaccurate. Words can hurt. Deeply. But they can also heal.
Think of a time as a child, or
perhaps even as an adult, when someone said something hurtful to you.
Perhaps it was intended as a joke. Perhaps a teasing remark made
about your hair, or clothes, or house. Perhaps a cutting criticism of
something you did. Perhaps it was a sarcastic response to a mistake
you made. Perhaps, even, a flow of heated words aimed solely at
destroying your confidence and self-worth.
Now, think of a time when someone
spoke love into your life. Perhaps it was a grandparent whose words
never failed to soothe you. Perhaps it was a teacher or coach who
always had a word of encouragement for you. Perhaps it was an
employer who never failed to congratulate you for a job well down.
Perhaps it was a close friend who stepped up alongside you to offer
support in a trying time. Those words made such an impact in your
life that you never forgot them.
We have the power to make a
difference in the world, with just our words.
